Re-Run 82. FC-AFC LABRADOR SPRINGS BLACK TIE AFFAIR, “Tux,” BLM, Jack Gwaltney, III

Tux and Jack came to the line at 3:38 pm

F – Line brought him under the arc - had a couple loops left and right and slightly behind the fall area - then in to the bird

RR – Drove out half way between the two retired fall areas - took a couple loops far wide of the bird, then ran all the way over to get his bird

MR – His lind brought him in under the arc - took a left and a couple loops back and forth and then to the bird

16. FC-AFC BIG RIVER CHARLIE II, “Charlie,” BLM, Jim Rickoff

Charlie and Jim came to the line at 3:31 pm

F – His line brought him directly to the long flyer fall area and he quickly turned and grabbed his bird

RR – Drove out wide left of the fall area - turned left and made 1 loop farther left and then came all the way back to get his bird!

MR – Perfect line to the fall area - but went over it - then shortly came back to the bird and got it!

F – Stopped short and turned right - several loops up higher and then he found it

RR – Out to the fall area - stopped short - a right turn and then worked his way out to the bird

MR – Out to the bale - and then quickly worked his way back to locate the bird

Abe and Randi came to the line at 3:14 pm

F – Beautiful mark!

RR – Straight to the fall area - missed - took 1 loop in the area and then he got it!

MR – Drove out wide right - turned left and then went very very deep and out of the picture - hunted very deep - came back to the general area but had quite an extended hunt - gunners had to come out to help - dog was picked up

Fleurt and Mark came to the line at 3:07 pm

F – Her line to this bird was under the arc - took one curve to the left and came to the bird and got it

RR – Line out was wide right behind the blind and then over left to the bird

MR – Wide right of the blind - turned left and went all the way to the fall area - turned and took a couple large loops and then returned to the fall area and got the bird

103. FC-AFC OLLIE OOP, “Ollie,” BLF, John Stracka

Ollie and John came to the line at 3:00 pm

F – Here line brought her under the arc - had a few loops up and down near the gunners and then over left to the bird

RR – Good line under the arc to the area - one loop in the fall area and she got her bird

MR – The line out to this bird was wide right of the blind - but she turned and went left all the way to the fall area and got her bird

F – Went to the top of the hill after missing the bird - short additional hunt and then she located her bird

MR – Out to just before the water - turned right and went to the area under the arc and popped - she was handled to this bird

Flyer (F) -  Came in under the arc - drove straight to the bird

Right Retired (RR) - Drove deep and was handled back to this bird

Middle Retired (MR) - Started at the near side and ran down to his bird

Flyer (F) -  Two loops on the hillside and she scooped up her bird

Right Retired (RR) - Wide left going out - turned in too soon but good recognition  - hunted a good size area both left and right before locating her bird

Middle Retired (MR) - Down to the fall area - missed it - went a little too deep - but came back to it - Judges moved this throw so it lands in the 1st pond

9th Series Test Description
Land Triple 
Spangler Property

We are at the Spangler property for the 9th Series, with the Spangler house in the background. It is 82 degrees and sunny with 8-10 mph winds from the South. The mat is located at the top of a hill looking Northeast down into a large bowl shaped field. This test has a flyer hen pheasant, a dead hen mallard and a dead hen pheasant.

Bird #1 is a hen mallard that is thrown to the left into the water from a hay bale, where the gunners retire to when the dog is sent. This station is located towards the middle of the field. This bird lands approximately 305 yards from the mat. (We will refer to this bird as MR for Middle Retired)

Bird #2 station is located on the far right with a hen pheasant that is thrown angled back to the left landing 190 yards from the mat. These gunners will retire behind a small spruce tree after the dog is sent. (We will refer to this bird as RR for Right Retired)

Bird #3 Is the hen pheasant Flyer station. This gun station located on left side of the field, and the bird is thrown angled back up the hill at about 150 yards from the mat. (We will refer to this bird as F for Flyer)

This test is taking about 7-10 minutes per dog to complete.

8th Series – Water Blind

21 Dogs Started this Series

Test Dogs kicked off the 8th series on Friday morning at 10:22 am, beginning with "Fancy," handled by Dave Kress and then "Morgan," handled by Tom Hawley. Handlers got a good look at the test they would be running shortly.

The first running dog of this series was #54 FC-AFC CLARENCE RUTHERFORD, “Lumpy,” with handler Jim Horneck. They came to the line at 10:48 am on Friday morning.

The weather at the start of this series was nearing 80 degrees with partly cloudy skies and 10 mph breeze.

This was a quick Water Blind Series so there is not much to report ...

21 dogs were sent from the line in this series, taking a total of 1 hour and 22 minutes, which averages out to be a just about 4 minutes per dog.

8th Series – Water Blind

8th Series Test Description
Water Blind
Lucy Too Property

This test sits on the hill just deep and right of the technical pond here at the Lucy Too property again. We are facing WNW and the wind will be hitting the handlers in the back and left shoulder. The mat is placed a few feet behind a small hay bale forcing a decision from the start. 

The line will take the dog just right of a large cedar and then across a small road. From here, the terrain angles down to the left towards the pond. The dog must hold their line and continue tight left of the 2 hay bales placed close together. From there they will move out onto a wide point where they will stay right and be careful not to fall into a cove on their left. 

From the large point, they will enter the pond and start their swim. They will swim past a skinny point that will be on their right. As they pass this point the next obstacle will be a container ring around a group of poles. The dog must pass on the right of this grouping. The bird is planted on the left end of a large peninsula just ahead from here, place approximately 210 yards from the mat.

This test is taking approximately 3-5 minutes per dog.

The first running dog of the 7th series was #27 FC-AFC WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN QA2, “Wilma,” with handler Mark Huffman. They came to the line at 11:12 am on Thursday morning.

The weather at the start of this series was nearing 80 degrees with mostly clear skies and a light breeze. Friday mornings weather started in the upper 60s with party cloudy skies and a little bit more wind.

LR –Beautiful entry into the cattail pond - took a left line straight to her bird

Flyer – Down the hill to the pond  -swam to the right side of the bend in the peninsula - drove up the peninsula straight to his bird

LR –Angled across the hillside to the pond with the cattails - into the pond and straight to the bird in the front left of the cattails

Island –  Perfect line down the hill - into the pond and straight to the holding blind - up on the point - back in the water to the island and the bird

Island – Line was straight to the island and up the path but she kept going to the land - handled quickly back to the island and she got the bird

Flyer – Swam the pond - out over the peninsula - back into the pond to the shore - to the top of the levee, close to the guns - ran top and to the right - came down to get her bird

LR – Angled across the field to the corner - hunted the levee, bales and shore line - got deep down the shore and then came back again - on top of the levee - she covered all the ground area before entering the water - and then back out again -very extended hunt before going back into the pond and locating her bird

Island – Got in wide right of the line - swam to the peninsula o the way to the flyer area - back into the pond and back in front of the flyer guns - hunted the levee - handler started to handle - but the guns came out to help the dog - dog was picked up

LR – Good line into the cattails but kept going and drove through to the land - immediately handled again - required many whistles to get back to the cattails and finally get his bird

LR – Excellent line down the field - into the pond and swam straight to the bird that was in front of the left corner of the cattails

Our single test dog up this morning was Morgan with handler Tom Hawley .... Morgan came to the line at 7:02 am

Flyer – Down into the pond - he swam back in the water - up and out, he turned left and right - moved up the levee a few turns and got it

LR – Hunted the corner - exhausting his options on land - he got into the water and swam into the cattails for his bird

Island – Went to the point with the blind and continued across to the cattails - had to be handled down the backside of the point and back to the island - it was a difficult handle to this bird

Good Morning – Day 7

Good Morning and welcome back for the 7th day of the 2025 National Amateur Retriever Championship 🎉

I hope everyone is feeling bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning as we resume testing here at the 7th series! We are of course back at John and Laura Parrot's Lucy Too Property again. A single test dog has just run and we will be off to the running order to complete this test momentarily (starting with Dog #1)

This morning we have partly cloudy skies, with a 12 mph wind and temps currently at 68 degrees. Today has an expected high around 83 degrees this afternoon. Some rain or even a thunderstorm is possible this afternoon, but we will keep you posted as the day goes on. So stay tuned as we prepare to resume this 7th Series!

We only have 8 dogs left to run in this series to complete the 7th! Then we will be on to the 8th!

Re-Run 94. AFC YOU STOLE MY HEART MAGGIE MAE, “Maggie,” BLF, Mark Medford

Maggie and Mark came to the line at 7:08 pm

Flyer – A short hunt with a loop high and then low to find her bird

LR – Swam between the cattails and the peninsula - turned to the cattails and came out with her bird shortly!

Island – Good line to the island and right back in with her bird for a good job!

Double Handle 106. FC-AFC OCTOBER SKY’S SWEET BABY BEAUREGARD, “Beau,” YLM, Chad Worsell

Beau and Chad came to the line at 6:50 pm

Flyer – Into the pond - over the point to the far shore - up the hill and drilled it!

Island – Swam straight to the island and went over it - had to handle back to it

LR – Good line into the water - a little deep and no wind - drove all the way through - had to handle back to this one too

Handle 105. AFC JAGGER’S RUFF-N-READY ROADTRIP QA2, “Jagger,” CLM, Jeff Deelstra

Jagger and Jeff came to the line at 6:38 pm

Flyer – Smack!

LR – went to the corner for a big hunt - moved into the pond but did not find it - got out heading in - turned back and  for his bird and got it!

Island – Down into the pond on an excellent line - straight to the island - but he ran through and had to handle back to it.

Double Handle 104. FC-AFC TANKS FOR THE MEMORIES II, “Hope,” BLF, Shane Olean

Hope and Shane came to the line at 6:23 pm

Flyer – Line under the arc - quick left and right and she was to the bird

LR – Wide left on land -  ran on land up the levee - was quickly handled to the water and to the bird

Island – Swam between the cattails and the island and kept going to land - was quickly handled - and she came back in with a bumper

103. FC-AFC OLLIE OOP, “Ollie,” BLF, John Stracka

Ollie and John came to the line at 6:12 pm

Flyer – Out under the arc and straight to her long flyer

LR – Wide left line and she hunted back and forth on land - a lengthy hunt on land and then into water and she located her bird

Island – Good line to the island -  a couple loops on the island to find her bird - got it!

Pick-up 99. FC-AFC SEASIDE’S SMARTY JONES, “Smarty,” BLF, Derek Smith

Smarty and Derek came to the line at 5:56 pm

Flyer – Came in at the guns - had a short hunt and got it

LR – Over the point and back into the cattail pond - all the way to the far side - had to handle back to his bird - but he could not come up with it - dog was picked up
