1:00 pm
Kurt Hallgren, DVM CVSMT, Medical Director, Town and Country Veterinary Clinic, Marinette, WI |
Kurt discussed ocular Injuries in the field, GI issues like vomiting and diarrhea and a quick overview of flea, tick and heart-worm medications.
He explained that eyes are easy to injure, and most injuries involve the clear cornea.
Injuries can come from:
- Brush, grass, thorns, foreign material and woody objects, stick tights, and porcupine quills.
- Self trauma, like scratching at irritations
- Injuries from other dogs
- Third eyelid is where stuff gets stuck
Typical treatment involves numbing and then flush, flush, flush!
Tips for while you are out In the field at this event:
- You should give a quick exam:
- Look for red or weeping, clawing or pawing at the eye
- Flush flush flush!
- See the vet station at the trial or go visit the vet in the premium if needed
- Always carry saline flush solution!
